Practical Assessment - Instructions for Assessor
Conditions of Assessment: Assessors must satisfy SNR/ASQA assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Where assessment of competency includes third party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the required outcomes of the unit. Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
Demonstration Requirements: Trainee is to demonstrate –
• Recognise and assess conditions that require testing.
• Identify the appropriate action according to procedures and within scope of responsibility, including:
- Selecting, preparing and using gas testing equipment
- Applying testing regime
- Selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Identifying hazards and applying control measures
- Cleaning and maintaining equipment
• Take readings and interpret, report/record relevant data.
• Apply known solutions to routine problems.
• Communicate clearly and unambiguously with a range of personnel on safety conditions and procedures.
Assessor is to schedule an appropriate time and duration for the Trainee to demonstrate the assessment task/s and associated questions.
Oral Questions: Questions must be asked while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/s have been completed.
Flexibility: Assessor to modify activities to cater for variations in workplace context and environment.

Practical Assessment - Instructions for Candidate
To meet the requirements of this unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete the Practical Assessment. The assessor may be also asked to provide additional evidence to attach to the Practical component. This checklist should be completed in the following ways: -
(Satisfactory)- Indicates demonstration to an acceptable industry standard with application of required knowledge, problem solving, following safe work practices and meeting the workplace responsibilities and expectations as required.
(Not Yet Satisfactory)- In this case, reasons should be given to justify a decision of being unsuccessful.
Re-assessments should be carried out only on that particular area where the participant were deemed unsuccessful and further evidence is required. The trainer or assessor needs to observe you demonstrating the following essential skills in your workplace or in a simulated environment. In order to achieve competency in this unit, every box should have a tick.
Conditions of Practical Assessment: The assessor / trainer will provide the instructions, if you are unclear about what you have to do, clarify instructions with your assessor /trainer before commencing practical tasks. You must be observed independently, and all activities demonstrated satisfactory. Practical tasks must be undertaken with correct footwear, high vis clothing and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may be required as appropriate.
The Practical Assessment may be stopped immediately at any time if you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, the assessor / trainer, property or equipment in any danger. If this happens, rescheduling of the assessment will be at the discretion of your assessor / trainer.

Section A - Plan and Prepare / Did the participant:
-
A1 - Demonstrate and/or explain the steps required to prepare for the selected atmospheric testing task, including:
• Work out the type of gas/atmosphere to be tested, and explain why it must be tested.
• Identify work permit systems.
• Follow company SOP.
• Identify and choose the appropriate testing equipment for the task. (Including PPE you are required to wear). Calibrate the equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and workplace procedures.
• Work out and explain the method of testing to be used, and the sampling pattern required.
• Identify and explain the hazards from the possible atmosphere contaminants, including the conditions under which they become hazardous.
• Assess the risks involved with the hazards, and work out appropriate hazard control measures. Implement the hazard control measures (including use of personal protective equipment) where required.

A2 - Through completion of this task, learner must demonstrate:
• Knowledge of common chemical asphyxiates
• Knowledge of common irritants and corrosives
• Knowledge of common flammable gases
• Knowledge of narcotics

Section B - Test Gas / Did the participant:
-
B1 - Demonstrate and/or explain the steps required to conduct the selected atmospheric testing task.
• Conduct the gas/atmosphere testing following appropriate procedures, using testing equipment correctly
• Read the instruments and interpret the readings as being safe or not safe
• Report the results of the readings to appropriate personnel/workers, including your recommendations for steps to be taken.
• Work out whether ongoing monitoring of the gas/atmosphere is needed, and the steps that must be taken to conduct ongoing monitoring.
• Take appropriate action if readings are unacceptable, following workplace procedures.

B2 - Through completion of this task, learner must demonstrate:
• Ability to apply numeracy skills to read instruments and interpret the results.
• Knowledge of units of measurement used to express concentration of atmospheric contaminants.
• Knowledge of exposure standards.
• Knowledge of explosive range, upper and lower explosive limits.
• Knowledge of common chemical asphyxiates.
• Knowledge of common irritants and corrosives.
• Knowledge of common flammable gases.
• Knowledge of narcotics.

Section C - Maintain Equipment / Did the participant:
-
C1 - Demonstrate and/or explain the steps required to maintain the equipment used and finalise the task.
• Conduct maintenance procedures on the testing equipment used in accordance with workplace procedures, including:
     - Cleaning the equipment
     - Inspecting and fault finding and dealing with faults
     - Storing equipment in the required location, in the appropriate condition

C2 - Complete and maintain the records of tests and results of testing in accordance with workplace procedures.

C3 - Through completion of this task, learner must demonstrate:
• Ability to apply writing skills to complete the required workplace reports and forms.
