Practical Assessment - Instructions for Assessor
Conditions of Assessment: Assessors must satisfy SNR/ASQA assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Where assessment of competency includes third party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the required outcomes of the unit. Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
Demonstration Requirements: Trainee is to demonstrate –
• Conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations.
• Driving and operating the equipment to site conditions.
• Completion of operations to specification using at least two different material types (i.e. one different material per occasion) including:
- Stripping/spreading materials
- Backfilling
- Excavations
- Mixing materials
• Selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing attachments on at least two occasions (i.e. one attachment per occasion), the attachment must be certified and approved in line with workplace procedures and could include, but not limited to, the following:
- Multipurpose bucket
- Forks
- Dozer blade
- Backhoe
- Auger
- Chain digger
- Power broom
- Profiler
- Tiller/mixer
- Rotary hoe
- Hammer
- Asphalt cutter/saw
- Concrete cutter/saw
- Rake
• Assisting with loading and unloading skid steer loader from float/trailer.
• Safely parking and securing equipment.
In the course of the above the candidate must also:
• Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures.
• Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities.
• Apply safe work practices, identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues.
• Apply problem solving and troubleshooting techniques when operating equipment.
• Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms.
• Identify common equipment faults.
• Apply levelling techniques.
• Establish weight of load.
     • Manage changes in the loads centre of gravity during transportation.
• Select and use the required tools and equipment.
• Apply methods of changing machine attachments.
• Use a range of communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work activity, including hand, audible and other signals.
• Meet written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with equipment operations.
• Organise work activities to meet all task requirements.
Assessor is to schedule an appropriate time and duration for the Trainee to demonstrate the assessment task/s and associated questions.
Oral Questions: Questions must be asked while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/s have been completed.
Flexibility: Assessor to modify activities to cater for variations in workplace context and environment.

Practical Assessment - Instructions for Candidate
To meet the requirements of this unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete the Practical Assessment. The assessor may be also asked to provide additional evidence to attach to the Practical component. This checklist should be completed in the following ways: -
(Satisfactory)- Indicates demonstration to an acceptable industry standard with application of required knowledge, problem solving, following safe work practices and meeting the workplace responsibilities and expectations as required.
(Not Yet Satisfactory)- In this case, reasons should be given to justify a decision of being unsuccessful.
Re-assessments should be carried out only on that particular area where the participant were deemed unsuccessful and further evidence is required. The trainer or assessor needs to observe you demonstrating the following essential skills in your workplace or in a simulated environment. In order to achieve competency in this unit, every box should have a tick.
Conditions of Practical Assessment: The assessor / trainer will provide the instructions, if you are unclear about what you have to do, clarify instructions with your assessor /trainer before commencing practical tasks. You must be observed independently, and all activities demonstrated satisfactory. Practical tasks must be undertaken with correct footwear, high vis clothing and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may be required as appropriate.
The Practical Assessment may be stopped immediately at any time if you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, the assessor / trainer, property or equipment in any danger. If this happens, rescheduling of the assessment will be at the discretion of your assessor / trainer.

• Locating or creating a Safe Work Method Statement for the task.
• Locating the relevant Materials Safety Data Sheets for the task.

A3 - Identify the signage, site isolation and traffic control requirements, and explain their application.

A4 - Identify the environmental protection requirements for the tasks and explain their application.

A5 - Ability to apply processes for interpreting drawings and sketches.

B1 - Looks for signs of operator fatigue and explains how it should be managed.

B3 - Perform a risk assessment for any hazards found and note risk level for each.

B4 - Check for existing risk control measures in consultation with the appropriate personnel/workers.

B5 - Implement appropriate control measures.

B6 - Identify and explain the safe operational techniques and procedures required to account for identified hazards.

B7 - Wears correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where appropriate.

Section C - Routine Checks

C1 - Pre-start check.

C2 - Start-up check, including checking the serviceability of loader controls and functions, implements or other attachments, brakes and manoeuvrability.

C3 - Demonstrate the procedures to report any faults or other issues found.

C4 - For the designated skid steer loader tasks, demonstrate and explain how to:
• Select any plant, tools or equipment needed for the task.
• Check plant, tools and equipment for serviceability.
• Report or rectify any faults according to site procedures.

Section D - Operate

D1 - In a minimum of 2 different soil types, demonstrate and explain the following skid steer loader operations:
• Excavating materials.
• Loading and transporting materials.
• Unloading materials, including into vehicles.
• Levelling materials. This should include:
     - Stripping/spreading topsoil and materials.
     - Mixing materials.
• Site clean-up.

D2 - Competently demonstrate and explain the use of attachments on a skid steer loader for a given task:
• Select the appropriate attachment for the task, and explain your choice
• Fit and test the attachment to ensure correct fitting and operation
• Use the attachment in accordance with recommendations and design limits
• Remove, clean and store the attachment in the designated location

D3 - Competently demonstrate and explain the procedure for using a skid steer loader to lift, carry and place materials using slings:
• Identify or calculate the weight of the load
• Select and inspect the slings appropriate to the task, and calculate the safe working load
• Attach slings to the skid steer loader
• Position the skid steer loader in the designated location and position
• Lift the load, carry the load to the designated location, and place the load safely and effectively

D4 - Knowledge of the chain of responsibility for loading and unloading of equipment.

D5 - Knowledge of skid steer loader characteristics, capabilities and limitations.

D6 - Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms.
