Practical Assessment - Instructions for Assessor
Conditions of Assessment: Assessors must satisfy SNR/ASQA assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Where assessment of competency includes third party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the required outcomes of the unit. Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
Demonstration Requirements: Trainee is to demonstrate –
• Conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations.
• Driving and operating the equipment, and adjusting techniques to suit site conditions.
• Completion of operations using at least two different material types and include the mandatory tasks of:
- Compacting materials to pattern and density
- Sealing and finishing
- Adjusting at least two of the following:
- Interchangeable drums
- Spray bars
- Scraper bars
- Wheel/drum brooms
- Drag brooms
- Blades
- Assisting with loading and unloading skid steer loader from float/trailer
- Parking and securing of equipment
In the course of the above the candidate must also:
• Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures.
• Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities.
• Carry out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures where applicable.
• Apply safe work practices, identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues.
• Apply problem solving and troubleshooting techniques when operating equipment.
• Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms.
• Identify common equipment faults.
• Apply operating techniques for levelling and compacting.
• Select and use the required tools and equipment.
• Use a range of communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work activity, including hand, audible and other signals.
• Meet written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with equipment operations.
• Organise work activities to meet all task requirements.
Assessor is to schedule an appropriate time and duration for the Trainee to demonstrate the assessment task/s and associated questions.
Oral Questions: Questions must be asked while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/s have been completed.
Flexibility: Assessor to modify activities to cater for variations in workplace context and environment.

Practical Assessment - Instructions for Candidate
To meet the requirements of this unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete the Practical Assessment. The assessor may be also asked to provide additional evidence to attach to the Practical component. This checklist should be completed in the following ways: -
(Satisfactory)- Indicates demonstration to an acceptable industry standard with application of required knowledge, problem solving, following safe work practices and meeting the workplace responsibilities and expectations as required.
(Not Yet Satisfactory)- In this case, reasons should be given to justify a decision of being unsuccessful.
Re-assessments should be carried out only on that particular area where the participant were deemed unsuccessful and further evidence is required. The trainer or assessor needs to observe you demonstrating the following essential skills in your workplace or in a simulated environment. In order to achieve competency in this unit, every box should have a tick.
Conditions of Practical Assessment: The assessor / trainer will provide the instructions, if you are unclear about what you have to do, clarify instructions with your assessor /trainer before commencing practical tasks. You must be observed independently, and all activities demonstrated satisfactory. Practical tasks must be undertaken with correct footwear, high vis clothing and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may be required as appropriate.
The Practical Assessment may be stopped immediately at any time if you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, the assessor / trainer, property or equipment in any danger. If this happens, rescheduling of the assessment will be at the discretion of your assessor / trainer.

Section A - Plan and Prepare

A1 - Access, interpret and apply roller operations documentation. Including site plans, rules, regulations, sketches and project quality requirements.

A2 - Obtain information from previous shift on issues that may impact on the work.

A3 - Identify, on the work plan and the ground, travel routes, servicing points and exclusion zones.

A4 - Communicate and coordinate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement.

A5 - Demonstrates knowledge of Safe Working Load (SWL) and Working Load Limit (WLL).
-
A6 - Material characteristics, including density and viscosity.
-
A7 - Demonstrates use and understanding of civil construction terminology.

A8 - Basic principles of material technology and material compaction for civil works.

A9 - Basic earthworks calculations.

A10 - Civil construction activity sequences of road construction, earthworks and drainage.

Section B - Hazards

B1 - Select and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

B2 - Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures including fire safety, accidents and other emergencies.

B3 - FATIGUE

B4 - Explain and identify workplace risks/hazards and how to manage/control them. Including isolating certain hazards.

Section C - Conduct Checks
-
C1 - Check for signs of damage and wear using appropriate diagnostic techniques.
-
C2 - Check fluid levels (allow engine to cool before checking some fluids).
-
C3 - Check security and condition of attachments.
-
C4 - Apply lubrication as required.
-
C5 - Replace basic components as required (Check operator’s manual for instructions for the specific dozer you operate).
-
C6 - Demonstrate the correct procedure for dealing with identified faults on the dozer (tagging and isolation techniques).
-
C7 - Report any faults you find to an authorised person and complete a fault report (contained in the Dozer Daily Inspection Checklist).

C8 - Prepare the roller for relocation.

C9 - Move the machine safely within and/or between work areas, observe relevant codes and traffic management requirements.

E4 - Turn off the main isolator switch to prevent battery discharge.

E5 - Turns off key.

E6 - Carry out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures where applicable.

E7 - List at least two different material types and include the mandatory tasks of:
• Compacting materials to pattern and density
