Practical Assessment - Instructions for Assessor
Conditions of Assessment: Assessors must satisfy SNR/ASQA assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Where assessment of competency includes third party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the required outcomes of the unit. Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
Demonstration Requirements: Trainee is to demonstrate –
     • Conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations.
     • Driving and operating the excavator and adjusting techniques to suit site conditions.
     • Walking the machine in a straight line.
     • Jump turning the machine.
     • Connecting auxiliary hydraulic lines and buckets or other attachments, if applicable.
     • Cleaning the undercarriage out as needed.
     • Keeping clear of obstacles.
     • Effectively using the heel of the bucket.
     • Correctly shutting down and parking the excavator equipment.
In the course of the above work the candidate must also:
     • Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures.
     • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities.
     • Apply safe work practices, identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues.
     • Apply problem solving and troubleshooting techniques when operating equipment.
     • Conduct bucket loading and discharge.
     • Side cast bulk materials.
     • Distribute bulk materials into materials handling equipment.
     • Inspect and prepare work area.
     • Conduct equipment positioning.
     • Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms.
     • Identify common equipment faults.
     • Manage changes in the load’s centre of gravity during transportation.
     • Use a range of communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work activity, including hand, audible and other signals.
     • Meet written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with equipment operations.
Assessor is to schedule an appropriate time and duration for the Trainee to demonstrate the assessment task/s and associated questions.
Oral Questions: Questions must be asked while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/s have been completed.
Flexibility: Assessor to modify activities to cater for variations in workplace context and environment.

Practical Assessment - Instructions for Candidate
To meet the requirements of this unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete the Practical Assessment. The assessor may be also asked to provide additional evidence to attach to the Practical component. This checklist should be completed in the following ways: -
(Satisfactory)- Indicates demonstration to an acceptable industry standard with application of required knowledge, problem solving, following safe work practices and meeting the workplace responsibilities and expectations as required.
(Not Yet Satisfactory)- In this case, reasons should be given to justify a decision of being unsuccessful.
Re-assessments should be carried out only on that particular area where the participant were deemed unsuccessful and further evidence is required. The trainer or assessor needs to observe you demonstrating the following essential skills in your workplace or in a simulated environment. In order to achieve competency in this unit, every box should have a tick.
Conditions of Practical Assessment: The assessor / trainer will provide the instructions, if you are unclear about what you have to do, clarify instructions with your assessor /trainer before commencing practical tasks. You must be observed independently, and all activities demonstrated satisfactory. Practical tasks must be undertaken with correct footwear, high vis clothing and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may be required as appropriate.
The Practical Assessment may be stopped immediately at any time if you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, the assessor / trainer, property or equipment in any danger. If this happens, rescheduling of the assessment will be at the discretion of your assessor / trainer.

Section A - Plan and Prepare

A1 - Identify, locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures.

A2 - Determine and explain how the documentation impacts your workplace, including day-to-day operations.

A3 - Locate or create a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS).

A4 - Interpret geological and survey data including identifying the following elements (where applicable):

Section B - Hazards

B1 - Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities.

B2 - Inspect the work area and path of movement for risks/hazards using a combination of physical site inspection and geological and survey data.

B3 - Assess the risks, including a risk/hazard analysis and evaluation.

B4 - Determine and implement risk/hazard control measures, using the Hierarchy of Hazard Control.

B5 - Review the new risk level of any controlled hazards and take appropriate action if the risk level is still too high.
-
B6 - Consult with the appropriate personnel/workers.
-
B7 - Demonstrates knowledge on identifying operator fatigue and how it should be managed.
-
B8 - Demonstrates knowledge on what to do in the case of an emergency such as a fire.
-
B9 - Select, check and fit PPE appropriate to excavator operations.

Section C - Pre – Start Checks and Basic Maintenance:

C1 - Demonstrate and explain how you would evaluate the suitability of the supplied equipment and/or attachments so you can maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of your work activities.

C2 - Conduct routine checks of the excavator using the checklist provided (or another relevant workplace document) and the appropriate hand tools (as required).
-
C3 - Check for signs of damage and wear.
-
C4 - Check fluid levels (allow the engine to cool before checking some fluids).
-
C5 - Check the security and condition of attachments.
-
C6 - Replace basic components as required (check the operator’s manual for instructions for the specific excavator you operate).
-
C7 - Demonstrate the correct procedure for dealing with identified faults on the excavator (tagging and isolation techniques).
-
C8 - Complete a fault report (contained in the Inspection Checklist) for any identified hazards.
-
C9 - Report any faults you find to an authorised person and complete a fault report, or other report as required.

Section D - Operate the Excavator

D1 - Select appropriate operating techniques based on the task and environment.

D2 - Assess the material to be shifted, ensuring that you know how to dispose of any environmentally sensitive fluids and materials in the designated area, as outlined in your site environmental management policies and procedures.

D3 - Take appropriate action to resolve non-hazardous unplanned situations as indicated by monitoring systems or alarms.

D4 - Take appropriate action to resolve simulated unplanned or emergency situations selected by your trainer.

D5 - Demonstrate smooth and controlled excavator operations to complete the task.

D6 - Driving and operating the excavator and adjusting techniques to suit site conditions.

D7 - Loading bulk materials into materials handling equipment.
