Practical Assessment - Instructions for Assessor
Conditions of Assessment: Assessors must satisfy SNR/ASQA assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Where assessment of competency includes third party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the required outcomes of the unit. Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
Demonstration Requirements: Trainee is to demonstrate –
     • Conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations.
     • Driving and operating the wheel loader for operations and adjusting techniques to suit site conditions.
     • Shifting loads, carries the load as close to the ground as possible and deposits load to the correct location.
     • Parking and securing the equipment.
In the course of the above work the candidate must also:
     • Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures.
     • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities.
     • Carry out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures where applicable.
     • Apply safe work practices, identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues.
     • Apply problem solving and troubleshooting techniques.
     • Conduct loading and unloading.
     • Manage changes in the loads centre of gravity during transportation.
     • Select and use the required tools and equipment according to original equipment manufacturer manual.
     • Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms.
     • Identify common equipment faults.
     • Inspect and prepare work area.
     • Use a range of communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work activity, including hand, audible and other signals.
     • Meet written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with equipment operations.
Assessor is to schedule an appropriate time and duration for the Trainee to demonstrate the assessment task/s and associated questions.
Oral Questions: Questions must be asked while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/s have been completed.
Flexibility: Assessor to modify activities to cater for variations in workplace context and environment.

Practical Assessment - Instructions for Candidate
To meet the requirements of this unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete the Practical Assessment. The assessor may be also asked to provide additional evidence to attach to the Practical component. This checklist should be completed in the following ways: -
(Satisfactory)- Indicates demonstration to an acceptable industry standard with application of required knowledge, problem solving, following safe work practices and meeting the workplace responsibilities and expectations as required.
(Not Yet Satisfactory)- In this case, reasons should be given to justify a decision of being unsuccessful.
Re-assessments should be carried out only on that particular area where the participant were deemed unsuccessful and further evidence is required. The trainer or assessor needs to observe you demonstrating the following essential skills in your workplace or in a simulated environment. In order to achieve competency in this unit, every box should have a tick.
Conditions of Practical Assessment: The assessor / trainer will provide the instructions, if you are unclear about what you have to do, clarify instructions with your assessor /trainer before commencing practical tasks. You must be observed independently, and all activities demonstrated satisfactory. Practical tasks must be undertaken with correct footwear, high vis clothing and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may be required as appropriate.
The Practical Assessment may be stopped immediately at any time if you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, the assessor / trainer, property or equipment in any danger. If this happens, rescheduling of the assessment will be at the discretion of your assessor / trainer.

• If participant performs any task as not satisfactory, please provide feedback to the participant and record in the applicable comments section

Section A - Plan and Prepare for a wheeled loader task as described by your trainer

A1 - Accessing and applying the relevant documentation such as:
• Compliance and legislative requirements.
• Site information including geological and survey data.
• Other relevant work requirements and procedures.

A2 - Determine the appropriate path of movement.
-
A3 - Coordinate your work task with the relevant personnel/workers.
-
Section B - Use the Hazard Report Form provided to document the risk management process for a task determined by your trainer

B1 - Inspecting the work area and identifying hazards.
-
B2 - Conducting a risk assessment for identified hazards, including analysing and evaluating the hazards.
-
B3 - Checking to see if there are any existing procedures in place to deal with the identified hazards.
-
B4 - Identifying and implementing the appropriate risk treatment measures using the hierarchy of hazard control.
-
B5 - Completing the reports and records applicable to your worksite.
-
B6 - Demonstrating and explaining to your trainer how you would effectively consult and communicate with other workers throughout the risk management process.
Through the completion of this task the learner is to demonstrate:
• Knowledge of site and equipment health and safety procedures and operational procedures.
• Knowledge of site environmental and heritage requirements and constraints including the application of procedures and requirements for disposing of sensitive fluids and materials.

Section C - Conduct routine checks of the loader using the Wheeled Loader Inspection Checklist provided

C1 - This should include:
• Pre-start checks.
• Post-start (operational checks).
Through completion of this task the learner is to demonstrate:
• Ability to apply hand-eye coordination.
• Ability to apply diagnostic techniques.

C2 - Complete a fault report (contained in the Wheeled Loader Inspection Checklist) for identified faults.

C3 - Demonstrate the correct procedure for dealing with identified faults on the loader including tagging and isolation techniques.

Section D - Competently demonstrate how to operate the wheeled loader including the following tasks
-
D1 - • Use the bucket to excavate and shift materials.
• Use the bucket to dump materials in the appropriate location.
• Use the bucket to level a surface.

D2 - Assess the materials to be shifted or lifted.
-
D3 - Drive to the work area and maintain safe speed at all times while avoiding vehicular traffic and hazards.
-
D4 - Competently use the loader controls to shift the materials.
-
D5 - Competently place the load safely in the designated position.
-
D6 - Monitor all gauges and alarms throughout the operation.
-
D7 - Maintain communication with the appropriate personnel/workers (or trainer) and follow instructions at all times.
-
D8 - Competently shift the required materials taking care to avoid any negative impact on the environment.
-
D9 - Take appropriate action to resolve non-hazardous unplanned situations and changing work conditions.
-
D10 - Take appropriate action to resolve simulated unplanned or emergency situations selected by your trainer.
-
D11 - Complete all tasks in the allotted timeframe and in accordance with quality requirements. Trainer to provide plans, reports, maps and specifications as required to complete wheeled loader operations.
Through completion of this task the learner is to demonstrate:
• Ability to apply hand-eye coordination.

Section E - Park and shut down the wheeled loader

E1 - Park the loader avoiding site and equipment hazards.
-
E2 - Park on a flat level surface.
-
E3 - Apply locks and holding brakes.
-
E4 - Put the loader in neutral gear (if applicable).
-
E5 - Release pressure from the hydraulic lines.
-
E6 - Remove the keys from the ignition and lock the cab (where appropriate).
-
E7 - Take any other appropriate action as defined by the operator’s manual.

Section F - Conduct routine checks and basic maintenance on the wheeled loader
-
F1 - Check for signs of damage and wear.
-
F2 - Check fluid levels (allowing the engine to cool before checking some fluids).
-
F3 - Check the security and condition of attachments.
• Learner to demonstrate correct manual lifting techniques as required.

F4 - Replace basic components as required (check the operator’s manual for instructions for the specific loader you operate).

F5 - Report any faults you find to an authorised person and complete a fault report.
