MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres

Our blended delivery course is a flexible option which reduces the amount of face to face training hours for the student,  and allows self paced online learning. The student is able to complete the course theory component online, self-paced, at a time that suits and will then attend a Civil Safety Training Centre for their practical training and assessment session. 

Civil Safety Training Centres are located: Cairns, Gold Coast, Gladstone, Mackay, Moranbah, Rockhampton, Townsville & Weipa. Onsite training for groups is offered QLD wide.

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

Working environment may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.

The unit is suitable for use in the following situations:

  • confined spaces
  • enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
  • hot work
  • storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
  • testing as part of issuing a work permit
  • monitoring as part of working under a work permit
  • open areas
  • holding the gas tester by hand
  • lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.

This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

There are no pre-requisites for this course 

The online theory component can usually be achieved within 1.5 to 3 hours;  timeframe is dependent on the individual students learning mode and level of prior skills and knowledge. 

Practical sessions are booked as half day sessions, students may achieve competency within shorter time frames, or alternatively require an extended session; dependent on the individual students learning mode and level of prior skills and knowledge.

Students attending this course must be a minimum of 15 years of age. 

Students must hold a USI number (unique student identifier) number to enrol in any nationally recognised course in Australia. Students must ensure they have obtained a USI number before enroling in this course. For more information go to

Students are required to complete a LLN (language, literacy, numeracy) questionnaire.  This process enables Civil Safety to determine if  the student requires any additional language, literacy and numeracy support to complete the course requirements, and allows our trainers to plan their delivery accordingly. Alternatively, where a need is identified, students will be advised of external LLN support service providers they can engage to assist them to gain the level of LLN required to achieve the course requirements,  prior to booking into a course. Students must possess a level of physical fitness that allows them to complete the practical tasks required.  Any disabilities must be advised during the enrolment process. In addition, a Fitness to Participate Form will be provided at commencement of the course,  to identify any ‘current’ ailments, injuries, or disabilities that may impact the students ability to perform physical tasks required during the course.  

Due to safety requirements, students attending this course must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as follows: 

  • High Vis Shirt (if students do not own a high- vis shirt, a high-vis vest will be provided by Civil Safety. 
  • Steel cap boots are preferred, however closed in shoes are acceptable 

All other PPE required will be provided by Civil Safety. 

Students are required to attend a minimum of 10 minutes  prior to course start time. Arriving after course start time may result in training being refused as critical course content may have been missed. 

Our tea rooms provide tea and coffee and  fridges and microwaves are provided for students who wish to bring a packed morning tea and lunch.
